An array of speakers from a swath of academia and industry came together in Charleston talk about the burgeoning business of biosciences this week.
The Bioscience Association of West Virginia hosted the third annual Biosciences Summit to showcase research and commercialization efforts in state laboratories and boardrooms. The event highlights the industry efforts in the state, attracting state leaders such as Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.

West Virginia isn’t a hub of bioscience business…yet. But the man who started a struggling biotech company years ago in Athens, Ohio and then sold it for $100-million dollars believes the state has what it takes to become a bioscience leader.
Dave Scholl, considered a biotech pioneer, shared his success story with 130 university researchers, economic developers and biotech company representatives from around the state during Thursday’s 3rd annual West Virginia Biosciences Summit. The event was held in Charleston at the Marriott.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A West Virginia native is among 11 scientists picked for a new $3 million award.
Cancer researcher Dr. Lewis Cantley, originally of Big Chimney and a graduate of Herbert Hoover High School, is an inaugural winner of the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences.

Ohio Biotech Entrepreneur to Keynote Event; Industry Experts to Present
Charleston, W.Va. (Feb. 4, 2013) – Dave Scholl helped grow Athens, Ohio-based Diagnostic Hybrids into a $100 million biotech company and is now a partner in a regional venture capital firm and involved with the billion dollar Third Frontier Program in Ohio. He, along with 20+ other life science experts, will share experiences and discuss strategies West Virginia can implement to successfully grow discoveries and the bioscience industry during the Bioscience Association of West Virginia’s 3rd Annual West Virginia Bioscience Summit.
The event will take place from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at the Town Center Marriott Hotel in Charleston, West Virginia. Media are encouraged to attend.
WVU Health Sciences Gets $19.6 Million NIH Grant

Partners will match it for $53 million total grant

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The National Institutes of Health has awarded WVU Health Sciences a $19.6 million research grant to study health issues that most commonly affect state residents, according to the school.
Several other healthcare agencies across the state have committed to matching the grant with $33.5 million for a total of $53.1 million going to the school over the next five years.
